Budgeting a Furniture Project

How to calculate the true cost: lumber, hardware, finish, wear and tear, and your hours.

Lumber (40–60%)

Calculate the volume with the Board Foot calculator and add 15–20% for cutting waste.

Hardware and glue (10–20%)

Hinges, drawer slides, screws and glue are often underestimated. Make a separate list.

Finishing (5–10%)

Sandpaper, oil, lacquer, brushes. Hardwood usually calls for pricier finishes.

Hours and wear

Selling your furniture? Charge an hourly rate plus 5–10% for blades, bits and electricity.

Profit margin

Professional furniture makers add a 20–40% margin on top of cost. Our Pricing & Quote Spreadsheet automates this.
