Minimize Cutting Waste in 7 Steps
1. Write a complete cut list first
Note every part with length, width and quantity. Without a list you'll buy too much — or too little.
2. Longest parts first
Place the longest pieces on a board first, then fill the remainder with short parts. Our Cut List calculator uses this same 'first fit decreasing' principle.
3. Account for the kerf
A saw blade removes 2–4 mm per cut. Over 10 cuts that's already more than an inch of wood.
4. Pick the right stock length
Compare 8, 10 and 12 ft boards. Sometimes a longer board is cheaper per usable foot.
5. Keep offcuts organized
Anything over 12 in is useful for small projects, jigs or test cuts.
6. Check for defects
Plan knots and cracks into the waste section, never into visible parts.
7. Measure twice, cut once
The oldest advice is still the best.
